Top 150 Privately Held Companies St. Louis - Chuck and Keith Poettker | Poettker Construction

After two years of strong revenue growth at Poettker Construction — the company grew 41 percent from 2013 to 2014 to $92.6 million and then by 31 percent to $121.6 million in 2015 — sales were down slightly in 2016 at $120.92 million.

Officials with the Breese, Illinois-based general contractor said the small decrease was due to a drop in sales across a variety of industry sectors.

“Some of our larger projects in the pipeline in 2015 took longer in the planning stages, getting the green light late in 2016,” said Keith Poettker, who during 2016 was promoted from vice president of preconstruction to president of the company as part of an ongoing succession plan. Charles Poettker remains as chairman and CEO.

Today, Ameren, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Department of Veterans Affairs and Continental Tire account for the largest portion of Poettker’s project backlog. “These should help with a bump in revenue in 2017,” Keith Poettker said.

During 2016, the company completed work on the $20 million McKendree Metro Rec Plex in O’Fallon, Illinois, which includes two NHL-size ice rinks, an Olympic-size swimming pool and half-court basketball court for McKendree University. The company also wrapped up work on the $15 million Richard E. Workman Sports & Wellness Complex in Effingham, Illinois.

In October, the company was awarded a $31 million project to help build the new Jefferson Barracks VA Engineering Warehouse in St. Louis. The development is expected to be complete in September 2018.

Poettker said the company continues to struggle with finding and retaining top talent to manage the company’s projects. “We are concerned about a shortage of skilled tradesmen that can safely and efficiently keep up with the increased workload while meeting our expectations of quality craftsmanship and workmanship,” he said.

The company is owned by a group of 10 shareholders, which include Poettker family members and long-term employees.
